CONTRAST

Creative studio DIGRAPH is holding an exhibition, “We are Computational Craftsmen” from April 15th, Saturday to April 23rd, Sunday at the creative studio “CONTRAST” run by IN FOCUS.

DIGRAPH is a creative studio led by designer Hiromasa Fukaji and programmer Junichiro Horikawa. With the concept of “We are Computational Craftsmen”, they explore new possibilities for expression by combining computational processes and craftsmanship. They both have received international acclaim, including awards from The One Show, CANNES LIONS, and D&AD Awards.

In this exhibition, DIGRAPH’s representative methods, a graphic work using “Plotter Drawing”*, a technique that explores the boundary between the digital and the physical, and in addition to a new ceramic work, “Com-Potte” series using a new method that utilizes a 3D printer and the computational process will be featured and for sale.

With the ability to think logically using the computer as the starting point and the expressive power to create these works in the real world, they challenge new creative works that fuse the characteristics of both computers and humans (craftsmen). We hope everyone enjoys the world created by connecting digital and physical approaches from different fields.

*A method of converting digital data into physical movement using a plotter (a device that converts and outputs vector data) and drawing with various brush materials.

Hiromasa Fukaji
Designer / Graphic Researcher
Born in 1990 in Osaka. Conducts research on new graphic expression centered on “Plotter Drawing “* to create accidental expressions that occur at the boundary between the digital and real world. He has received numerous awards including Cannes Lions, The One Show, New York TDC Award, and D&AD Award.

Junichiro Horikawa
Programmer / Algorithmic designer
Born in 1984 in Tokyo. After graduating from Columbia University GSAPP AAD, he has been generating and researching various forms using algorithms inspired by geometry and natural ecology for many years. Currently, he uploads live tutorials and videos on an algorithmic design on Youtube. He has won awards at The One Show, Japan Media Arts Festival, and others, and published “Parametric Design with Grasshopper” and “Algorithmic Design with Houdini”.
